In anticipation of the six-episode miniseries, Folha de São Paulo has begun a special Sunday series featuring eight articles dedicated to the legendary pilot, blending original reports from the era with contemporary commentary. These special editions offer both longtime fans and newcomers the chance to relive, just as they did every Sunday in the 90s, Ayrton Senna’s historic moments on the track. It’s also an opportunity for the new generation to learn about the achievements of this national hero in preparation for the series premiere.
The first edition covers the challenges Senna faced during his first victory on Brazilian soil at the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix, achieved under adverse conditions: only one gear and a broken gearbox.
The cover features one of the first images of Gabriel Leone as Ayrton, struggling to hold the trophy after a grueling victory. “I felt immense pleasure in living, being at Interlagos, in my homeland, and seeing my people happy. It wasn’t the greatest victory of my life, but it was the most hard-fought,” Senna said at the time.
The miniseries will delve into Senna’s more personal and intimate side, exploring his journey of overcoming obstacles, his triumphs and disappointments, and his personality and relationships. The cast features both Brazilian and international stars: alongside Gabriel Leone are Alice Wegmann, Camila Márdila, Christian Malheiros, Gabriel Louchard, Hugo Bonemer, Julia Foi, Marco Ricca, Pâmela Tomé, and Susana Ribeiro. The international actors include Kaya Scodelario, Matt Mello, Arnaud Viard, Joe Hurst, Johannes Heinrichs, Keisuke Hoashi, Leon Ockenden, Patrick Kennedy, Richard Clothier, Steven Mackintosh, and Tom Mannion.
With general direction by Vicente Amorim, who also serves as showrunner, and direction by Julia Rezende, the series is produced by Gullane in partnership with Senna Brands and the Senna family for Netflix. It promises to deliver powerful emotions.
